Mid Coast Surfing ReserveSouth Port is now part of the Mid Coast Surfing Reserve!  We would like to thank members and the general public for their support to get this proposal accepted.

Surfing Reserves are 'iconic' places of recreational, environmental, historic, sporting and cultural value to the region. They aim at protecting surf breaks, reefs areas, cliff faces, etc.

After a public meeting, a steering committee was formed to look at dedicating the Mid Coast area as a Surfing Reserve.

Representatives on the committee include:
Chairperson: Sue Bennett Local surfer, resident, SA School Surfing President.
Vice Chairperson: Michael Nieuwendijk Local surfer and resident.
Secretary: Dick (Olly) Olesinski Surf Life Saving SA, South Port SLSC and resident.
Committee members:
Chris Warren Surfing SA and local surfer.
Bill Jamieson City of Onkaparinga and resident.
Rick Dabrow Local surfer and resident.
Corey Jackson SurfRider Foundation, local surfer and resident.
Steve Francis Local surfer and resident.
Chris Lemar Local surfer, Boardriding Club member and resident.
Ellen Watson Local surfer, youth representative and resident.

The steering committee have come up with directions to gain the surfing and aquatic community’s support to dedicate the Mid as a Surfing Reserve.

They include the following aims and objectives.

The Mid Coast Surfing Reserve recognises the uniqueness of the Mid Coast as a surfing and aquatic environment, the relationship of the whole aquatic community with the Mid Coast and the need to establish it as a stakeholder within the region.

Objectives of the Mid Coast Surfing Reserve focus on:

  • Celebrating the Mid’s surfing heritage and culture;
  • Ensuring a safe aquatic and beach environment;
  • Protecting the environment, and
  • Supporting Council’s Coastal Park initiatives.

The National Surfing Reserve Board recently voted unanimously to accept a submission from the Mid Coast Surfing Reserve Steering Committee and welcomed the Mid Coast as Australia’s first regional surfing reserve.

The Mid Coast Surfing Reserve aims to assist with managing and protecting the environmental, cultural, economic and social characteristics of an area from Christie Creek in the north to Pedler Creek, Moana in the south.

One of the main aspects that South Port members will relate to will be the celebration and recognition of surf sites in our area including the Hump, Rivermouth, Rincon and Snakes.

Thanks to all members who signed the community consultation form as that support certainly helped in the Mid being accepted as a surfing reserve.

A dedication will be held within the next 12 months and if you want any further information, see Olly.
